Krampus Bottled in Bond Rye is whiskey made the way we believe rye should be made—from the grain forward.

It starts less than 25 miles from our Bellingham distillery, with rye grown specifically for us by a Whatcom County farmer. And when we say rye, we mean it: the mash bill is 100% rye, well beyond the 51% required for a whiskey to legally be called rye.

Once the grain reaches Chuckanut Bay Distillery, we handle the process ourselves. We mill the rye, mash it, ferment it in traditional open wooden fermenters, distill it, barrel it, age it and ultimately bottle the finished whiskey—all under one roof.

Five Years of Oak and Time

Krampus Rye spends more than five years aging in new American white oak barrels made by Independent Stave Company. We specify barrels that are toasted before receiving a No. 3 char. That extra step develops another layer of interaction between whiskey and wood, contributing oak, vanilla and deeper flavors during maturation.

When the whiskey is ready, we bottle it without chill filtration, retaining the body and texture that developed during its years in the barrel.

What Bottled in Bond Means

“Bottled in Bond” isn't simply a name or a proof statement. The designation dates to the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, an early American consumer-protection law created to establish standards for authentic whiskey.

Among its requirements, a bonded whiskey must be produced by one distiller at one distillery during a single distilling season, aged for at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse and bottled at exactly 100 proof (50% ABV).

Krampus meets those standards—and with more than five years in the barrel, goes beyond the minimum aging requirement.

Built on an Award-Winning Rye Tradition

Krampus is our first bottled-in-bond rye, but we've been making rye whiskey in Bellingham for years.

Earlier releases of Chuckanut Bay Rye earned 95 points and a Gold Medal at the 2025 New York International Spirits Competition, along with 91 points and Gold at the 2022 USA Spirits Ratings.

Krampus Bottled in Bond Rye carries that same grain-to-glass philosophy into a whiskey aged longer, bottled at 100 proof and made entirely from rye grown close to home.

In the Glass

Expect peppery rye and deep grain character first, followed by oak, vanilla, maple and honey. The 100-proof strength gives the whiskey structure and weight without overwhelming the grain, leading into a dry, warm and lingering finish.

It's unmistakably rye—and perhaps just a little sinister.

How to Drink It

Start neat. That's the easiest way to experience what five-plus years of oak have done to 100% rye. Add a large cube if you prefer, or let the 100-proof backbone carry a Manhattan, Old Fashioned or another whiskey-forward cocktail.
