Award-winning recipe
Slightly sinister.
Seriously good coffee.
It starts down the road at Tony’s Coffee, a Bellingham roaster since 1971. We cold brew it ourselves, slowly, to capture the roast while keeping bitterness in check.
The name is new, but the liquid isn’t: it’s the same recipe we bottled as Old Busker Coffee Liqueur, a gold medalist in New York, the USA Spirits Competition and Seattle.
How it’s made
Cold brew, vanilla
and a little bite.
The coffee is Tony’s Coffeehouse Blend: Arabica beans from Central and South America, roasted past second crack into a bold, Italian-style dark roast. Tony’s has been roasting in Bellingham since 1971 and was named Roast Magazine’s 2021 Roaster of the Year.
We make the cold brew ourselves at the distillery. A slow, cold extraction pulls out deep coffee flavor without the harsh bitterness of hot brewing. Whole Madagascar Bourbon vanilla beans then steep in the liqueur over time. There is no vanilla syrup and no artificial flavoring anywhere in the bottle.
Underneath it all is a wheat spirit made from Pacific Northwest grain, chosen over the corn spirit most liqueurs use because its softer character lets the coffee and vanilla lead. We add only enough cane sugar to balance the roast, and bottle it at 30% ABV, stronger than most coffee liqueurs, so it stays dry and coffee-forward instead of syrupy.
Dark-roasted coffee with warm vanilla underneath.
Rich and roasty, with real coffee character and restrained sweetness.
Dry and clean, with the roast lingering.
How to drink it
Sip it neat or over ice, splash it into coffee or hot chocolate, pour it over vanilla ice cream, or shake it with cream for something dangerously easy to drink.
In an espresso martini, the extra strength means you taste the coffee, not just the sugar.
A Coin of Krampus
Every 750 ml bottle comes with one collectible metal Coin of Krampus, hidden under the seal. Each one carries deep-relief artwork by Angela Rizza, a celebrated Krampus artist.
There are four to find: The Bell, for the Warning; The Switch, for the Punishment; The Chains, for the Captivity; and The Basket, for the Abduction. Some turn up far less often than others, and there is no choosing. You find out which fate you drew when you break the seal.
